SCHOLAR CELEBRATION
📕 FIT ‘21 - Quan Quan 📕
We want to share an amazing success story from our FIT scholar program! Quan Quan was a FIT scholar in 2020-2021 and a graduate of Lincoln High School. Due to her outstanding academic achievements and community activism, CCSC recommended her to apply for the Ascend Synchrony Scholarship. This is an esteemed scholarship, and she was recently awarded $10,000 for the 2022-2023 academic year. We are so proud that her accomplishments are recognized and rewarded!
Currently, Quan Quan is a first year student at SFSU and has outstanding leadership skills and volunteerism. We are highlighting her to serve as an inspiration for other students. We continue to expect great things from Quan Quan in the future!

GRATITUDE CENTER
🍏 SF Marin Food Bank 🍏
Thank you to our 6 scholars who joined our volunteering event on a sunny Sunday morning on May 13th. In this volunteering event, students passed out food to people at the SF Marin Food Bank. Students partnered up with other food bank volunteers to give out fresh produce in a food pantry style at the SF Marin Food Bank. Not only were students able to fulfill their volunteer credits, but they were also able to give back to the community. Through their collaboration and community service, we were able to serve more than 150 households.
🍿 AAPI Movie Day 🍿
Thank you to our 11 students who joined our in person workshop for AAPI Movie Day on a hot afternoon on May 13th. To celebrate AAPI Heritage month, we watched the movie, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. Students had fun watching the movie in a mini theater set up with the movie projected onto a large screen and a speaker to enhance the sounds. In addition, we had popcorn, Chinese buns, and iced jasmine tea, so students got to enjoy snacks and beverages as they watched the movie. While we were celebrating AAPI Heritage Month, we were also rounding out the year with a fun event for the last event of the FIT Scholarship academic year.
LOCAL EVENTS
💜 Union Street Festival 🧡
Kick-off summer in the city at this year's 2023 Union Street Festival! Union Street Festival in the historic Cow Hollow District has a long standing tradition of connecting the community together since 1976. We believe in creating a space for diversity, unity and inclusion to allow for a safe gathering of local artists, musicians and families, while charting a path forward of sustainability and reducing the event’s overall carbon footprint. The festival takes place on June 3rd and 4th on Union Street from Fillmore St. to Octavia St.
Originally formed as a destination arts and crafts festival; the event has evolved over the years to include more experiences to create the fun and family-friendly atmosphere it’s known for today. Featuring artisan food and drinks from local vendors and top local musicians, the festival continues to draw high-end local craft vendors annually.
✊ Juneteenth Festival ✊
The Juneteenth Festival commemorates the emancipation of enslaved Black Americans and celebrates African American culture in recognition of black contributions and progress. It is held in the Fillmore District because it was once deemed the “Harlem of the West” being the epicenter of black entertainment, music, and culture in the Pacific Coast. The event will span 8 city blocks featuring dozens of special guests, community leaders, performers, vendors, exhibitions, carnival rides, games and tons of fun for the whole family. Join the Juneteenth Freedom Celebration Festival for free in the
Fillmore District on Saturday, June 17 from 11AM to 6PM
RSVP to the event for free on Eventbrite, using the link here.
🏳🌈 San Francisco Pride 🏳🌈
Join the 53rd annual San Francisco Pride Celebration to celebrate the LGBTQIA community in June’s Prime Month. This year’s theme is “looking back and moving forward”. Pride Celebration will be on June 24th and June 25th. During Pride Celebration, there will be vendors and exhibits at Civic Center Plaza and along Market Street. On June 25th, there will be a Pride Parade going down Market Street from Embarcadero to the Celebration at Civic Center. If you are interested in volunteering for Pride, the link to sign up is here.

INSIGHTS
☀️ Summer Tips ☀️
Did you know that the origin of summer vacation in the United States was for school aged kids to take a break from school work and help out with their parents in their fields and farms? This is because the United States was primarily made up of farmers during the early settlement of this country. Nowadays, this tradition of summer vacation continues to persist, and students of all ages get to take a break from school during the summer season. To beat the heat this summer, here are some tips:
Make sure to keep yourself hydrated. Do not wait until you are thirsty to drink water. Avoid caffeine as it is a diuretic, meaning that it will increase the production of urine and decrease the amount of water in your body.
Wear sunscreen and other sun protection like hats and glasses to protect yourself from the sun’s rays.
Keep your windows closed during the hottest times of the day to keep the cool air in and hot air out.
Limit your outdoor activities to the coolest times of the day like the morning and evening hours, making sure to rest often in shady areas.
Heat escapes your body through the skin. So the more skin you can cool down, the better. Using a water spray, having a cold shower, and cooling pulse points like the wrists and ankles can cool you down more quickly.
In the case that you are suffering from heat-related ailments like heat cramps, heat exhaustion, heat stroke, or sun burns, consuming electrolyte-rich drinks and applying aloe gel accordingly can help
